Do Supplements work?
Mixed answers--- Depends on who you ask.
The bodybuilding supplement industry is a multi-million dollar
business. Most manufacturers can't back up the claims made for
their magic bodybuilding supplements. Sometimes taking
supplements can be harmful. Especially young athletes with no
guidance.
The truth is there isn't much for scientific evidence supporting the
manufacturer's claim. In 1994 the US congress passed the Dietary
Supplement Health and Education Act. It defines any product that
contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or herbs in any single or
combination is considered a dietary supplement. If considered a
dietary supplement there isn't much for regulation.
Usually at the bottom of the jar or bottle it reads ***These
statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug
Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure,
or prevent any disease.
Why High School Student Athletes
Feel Pressure to Use
Steroids/Supplements
One in 17 high school football players, or 5.8%,
go on to earn a college scholarship
Baseball is slightly tougher in terms of attaining
a college scholarship - one in 19, or 5.6%
A male basketball player chances are one in 35,
or 2.9%, to get a scholarship in college
For females who participate in high school
basketball, only one in 34, or 3.1%, attain a
college basketball scholarship
Only four sports offer full rides to all athletes who
receive scholarships: football, men's and
women's basketball, and women's volleyball.

Critical Thinking Question
You are a high school athlete in your
senior year. You are competing for a full
ride scholarship. There is one more
scholarship left at your favorite college. If
you choose to take steroids you will for
sure get the last scholarship. If you do not
take steroids you end up not getting the
scholarship and losing your chance at
attending your favorite college. What
choice would you make???
To be a truly great athlete and maintain
your health, use your natural ability to
work hard in practice and concentrate on
developing your skills. There are no
shortcuts to success on the field or off it.
Remember--- It’s not winning if you are
cheating…
