THE RENAISSANCE IN ENGLAND
The Renaissance actually began in Italy
during the 14th century and extended in
England in the 17th century.
England was slow to participate in the
European Renaissance because they
experience terrible internal turmoil and
instability within the land.
Renaissance means “rebirth”
Renaissance Continued
With the two dominant aristocratic
houses, the Yorks and the Lancasters, the
country was hardly in condition to respond
to the new artistic and intellectual
currents.
This period is when printing of books
began, and is one of the most significant
and far reaching of all Renaissance
inventions.
Continued
Printing of books was introduced when
Henry Tudor overthrew King Richard III in
1485, and was crowned King Henry VII.
The Tudor dynasty ruled the country for
more than a century. England began to
become more stable and confident.

King Henry VIII- Ruled the throne when
his father died in 1509. He was a

Protestant Reformation
In the 16th century, the movement of
religious protest against the authority and
corruption of the Roman Catholic Church
had been simmering for years.
The movement was fiercely accelerated in
1517 when Martin Luther was nailed to
the door of a church in Germany.
Reformation
Henry VIII was a loyal champion of the
Roman Catholic Church; however, he was
against the Church laws when the pope
did not grant him a divorce from his first
wife, Catherine Aragon, because she did
not produce a male heir to the throne.
Reformation
When Henry asked for a divorce, the Pope
refused. Henry defied the Pope, and
remarried. He also declared himself

era.
In foreign affairs she became the wonder of her
age.

Spanish ships returning with wealth from
America to Asia.
These raids on Spanish shipping brought much
needed funds into Elizabeth’s treasury.

force of the age, sailed against England.
The Spanish ships were destroyed by a
storm that helped scatter and destroy the
Spanish fleet.
