What’s the Problem?
 Compared to the rest of the country, deprived areas have:
– three times as much burglary
– 30% higher mortality rates
– child poverty three times higher
– 70% of all English BME residents
What are the key features?
Two long term goals:
 lower worklessness and crime, better health, skills,
housing and physical environment
 narrow the gap between the most deprived areas and
the rest
What will change?
Three Key Dimensions:
 new policies, funding and targets
 better local co-ordination and community empowerment
 national and regional support
