this happen?
Spatial diffusion: the spread of some
phenomenon over space and through
time from a limited number of origins.
Phenomena can include ideas,
innovations, products, cultural traits,
and contagious diseases.

Tracking the AIDS Epidemic in the
US
An example of spatial diffusion
30 to 40 million people have died
from AIDS worldwide, including 2
million in 2007.
33 million worldwide are currently
infected with HIV/AIDS, of whom 2
million are children.
1% of all adults aged 15 to 49 in
the world are living with HIV,
including .6% of Americans.
2.7 million people contract HIV
each year, or about 7,400 each day.
Half of all people infected with HIV
are women.
HIV’s origins can be traced to Africa;
the first infection was a man in
Kinshasa, Congo, in 1959.
HIV is devastating sub-Saharan Africa,
where it is primarily spread among
heterosexuals. In Botswana, 39% of
the adult population is infected with
HIV.
In Zimbabwe, a country of 13
million, more than 780,000
children have been orphaned by
the AIDS epidemic.
In sub-Saharan Africa, 76% of the
young people with HIV are female.
They are four times more apt to
contract AIDS through heterosexual
sex, they progress to full-blown AIDS
faster, and they die sooner.
In the US, it is believed that the
first case entered via Haiti. It
spread primarily among
homosexual males and intravenous
drug users.
Today we will trace the diffusion of
AIDS through the US. In order to get
