Uninspected Passenger
Vessel (UPV) Enforcement
Sector Juneau summer 2008
LT Scott Pierce
Purpose
• Identify and address any safety
deficiencies
• This pertains to vessel, vessel operator,
passengers, gear…
• In a nutshell, the reason the Coast Guard
would board you is
SAFETY AT SEA
What to Expect
• Boarding Duration: approximately 10-15 minutes
• More organized paperwork & gear = shorter boarding
• Keep ALL documents in a plastic-protected binder
• Flexibility: i.e. following the vsl to the pier/dropoff point prior to
conducting the boarding (and after taking a head count)
• If you indicate a pax is working as a crewmember, be prepared to
show drug testing program documentation
• We will remain nearby, but we will work with you as efficiently as we
can to minimize the disruption of business
What to Expect
• If the Coast Guard boards me at sea, what
do I need to make sure I have with me?
