Program:
Personalized medicine is a fast and broad growing
medical concept that proposes the customization
of healthcare - with medical decisions, practices,
and/or products being tailored to the individual
patient. In this concept, laboratory medicine is often
employed for selecting appropriate and optimal
therapies based on the context of a patient’s
genetic content or other biomedical properties (age,
body
weight,
pharmacokinetics,
pharmacodynamics,
environmental
factors…).
Pharmacogenomics plays a major role in certain
aspects of personalized medicine. In addition to
technologies progress, personalized medicine also
may raise ethical considerations which should be
addressed. The Royal Belgian Society of
Laboratory Medicine decided to dedicate one
scientific day to this fascinating field, reviewing
some aspects by international opinion leaders.
