a popular shopping mall
• Bombing in Uganda in 2010 killing 74
people

political and economical dominance

RWANDA- GENOCIDE
• War between the Hutu and Tutsi people
• Hutu migrated to Rwanda centuries before the Tutsi
• The Tutsi used their ownership of cattle and combat
skills to take power over the Hutu
• Land ownership of the Hutu was then taken away by the
Tutsis
• The relationship took form of a class system where all of
the power was with the Tutsi minority
• Through German colonial powers, they also controlled
the Hutus through the Tutsis
• In 1994, the Hutu retaliated and killed over 800,000
Tutsis

■ After Kenya gained their independence,
tourism became the fastest growing sector of
the nations economy
– Represents 5% of tourist trade in Africa
– Represents 28% of tourist trade in East
Africa
– 19% of nation’s GDP
– Employs thousands
– Making a conscious effort to balance
between mass tourism and preserving the
natural environment
■ Tanzania is expecting to increase tourism
income by $500 million by attracting
international hotel chains

• High season is from June to August
• Cool, dry temperatures
• Wildlife is easier to spot
• $= Kenyan shilling (KSh), Tanzanian shilling
(Tsh), Ugandan Shilling (USh), Rwandan
franc (RFr), Burundi franc (BFr)
• Average cost of a local-style meal is
equivalent to $5 (U.S.)
