Definition
A freight village is a defined area within which all
activities relating to transport, logistic and distribution
of goods, both for national and International transit
are carried out by various operators.
A freight village must also be equipped with all the
public facilities to carry out the above mentioned
operations. In order to encourage intermodal transport
for the handling of goods, a freight village must
preferably be served by a multiplicity of transport
modes (road, rail, deep sea, inland waterway, air).
Page 20
Final Conference, Rome (Italy), 21st March 2007
The role of FVs
Manage the exponential increase of freight transport in
the optimal way
• The integrated model of freight village is preferable to
the non-integrated and scattered one:
•
–
–
more economic
efficient.
The FVs are the only transport infrastructures that
could offer the required infrastructures to develop:
RAIL/ROAD TRANSPORT
SYNERGIC ACTIONS WITH THE PORTS
INTERMODALITY

Intermodality and the role of FVs
Italy is the only Country in Europe
that has co-financed as from 1990
the construction of freight villages
Decrease roads congestion
concentrating traffic flows
45% of the Italian Intermodal traffic is
managed/operated by the intermodal terminals
inside the freight villages
