– Australia comprises a land area of almost 7.7
million square kilometres (sq km).
– The land area of Australia is almost as great as
that of the United States of America (excluding
Alaska), about 50% greater than Europe (excluding
the former USSR) and 32 times greater than the
United Kingdom.

– Australia is an independent Western democracy
with a population of almost 23 million. It is one of
the world’s most urbanised countries, with about
70 per cent of the population living in the 10
largest cities. Most of the population is
concentrated along the eastern seaboard and the
south-eastern corner of the continent.

sector, representing 68% of Australian GDP. The
agricultural and mining sectors account for 57% of the
nation’s exports.

• According to the Reserve Bank of Australia,
Australian per capita GDP growth is higher
than that of New Zealand, US, Canada and The
Netherlands. The past performance of the
Australian economy has been heavily
influenced by US, Japanese and Chinese
economic growth.
