Key Term’s

Fertilizer
O Substance such as manure or chemical fertilizer, put on agricultural land
to make it be able to produce more
Pesticide
O Chemicals designed to kill harmful plants (herbicide) and harmful insects
(insecticide)
Herbicide
O Chemicals designed to kill unwanted plants (weeds). If used improperly, a
herbicide can become a pollutant.
Land capability
O An ability of land to be used for a certain purpose
Mechanization
O
process whereby machinery takes over the work of humans or animals
Key Terms
By: Kyla
Intensive Farming
OLarge amount of labor, machinery, and fertilizers used on small farms.
Extensive Farming
OType of farming in witch small amounts of labour, machinery, and fertilizers
are used on large farms
Agribusiness
OAgricultural business. Operations include growing, storing, processing, and
distribution. It may be owned by a large corporation, a family, or an individual
Sustainable agricultural
OApproach to agricultural production that can be maintained indefinitely
without harming the environment
Organic farming
OAgricultural without the use of chemicals, antibiotics, hormones, or
genetically modified organisms (GMO’S) and does not damage the
environment
Criticism against the industry
by: Kyla
There are many people that love farming for its
natural resources and what farming can do for
the economy. However, farming is being criticized
for what they are doing to genetically alter their
livestock and for how companies are choosing to
farm.
Criticism against the industry

What do the aboriginals think about this?
O
The aboriginals believe that overall that corporate farming and
some other types of farming are disturbing their way of life.
What are people doing to change the problems?
O There are groups that have started campaigns to change the negative
impacts on farming. Some of these groups are:
O PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals)
O Greenpeace
Strategies that the industry/ government has done to increase
the sustainability of the Business of Farming
by: Kyla
Things that the government have done:
Established Marketing Boards
O They set the prices of the commodity that the market buys at
CFIA (Canadian food inspection agency)
O The CFIA insures food safety along the entire food distribution channel
O They make sure that the food is safe as it goes down the food distribution channel
Lower tax rate
O The government lowers there tax rate so the farmers are able to invest into the farm
and keep it running
Subsidies
O Subsides are the monies that government gives the farmers in order to maintain there
farm
Farming: It's importance to Canada

About 20% of people contribute to the everyday work within the agriculture
community which in further explanation includes the production of crops and
animals which is at about 1.4% in Canada's GDP (Gross Domestic Product.)
Agricultural trade plays an important role in the importance of agriculture
because trading with other countries brings in the profit for the Canadian
framers.
Us Canadians rely on our framers to produce inexpensive products so that
after all of the expenses for transportation, processing and profit are added
all of the in store expenses are still in an affordable range; because of the
high demand for farm fresh products in the 1950's Canadians were having
to spend about 25% of their everyday income on food; today we only spend
about 11% of our everyday income.
All of the factors mentioned here are very important to the country of
Canada, it is all important because of the everyday costs and job sectors
because without all the farming that is done secondary industries would not
be able to produce much of anything at all.
Farming: The different hotspots
By: Jordyn
First there are seven different classes of farming hotspots
but they are better classified into excellent (Class 1),
Good (Class 2,3), Fair\Poor (Class 4,5,6) Unsuitable
(Class 7.)
Farming: The different hotspots
By: Jordyn
British Columbia: 50% Unsuitable
46% Fair\Poor
3% Good
1% Excellent
Central Canada: 62% Unsuitable
20% Fair\Poor
14% Good
4% Excellent
Western Canada: 56% Fair\Poor
35% Good
7% Unsuitable
1% Excellent
Atlantic Canada: 44% Unsuitable
35% Fair\Poor
21% Good
Farming: The different hotspots
By: Jordyn
Based on the statistics given Western Canada
is the #1 hotspot within Canada with British
Columbia as the runner up. Not many places
in Canada have rich agriculture but they do
have some good soil to grow good quality fruits
and vegetables.
Successes of Farming
By: Brenan
O
O
O
O
O
O
O
Successes:
Larger farms with higher skilled workers in the industry
Use of organic farming
Specialized farms
Wide variety of wheat and crops
More cost effective transports provincial and international
Brings in money for economy
Healthy food policies
Difficulties of farming
By: Branan
O
O
O
O
O
Difficulties:
Use of chemical pesticides
Supply of produce is low
Diseases of plants and animals
Distribution systems are undeveloped
Farmers are not getting enough money to
pay for their farms
Factors that affect the
success of farming:
By: Brenan
Climate system: precipitation and heat input limits what is grown
Soil system: -too little moisture causes insufficient humus develops
too much moisture loses nutrients caused by leaching
Biological system: -helpful organisms such as bees improve farming
destructive organisms such as insect pests damage farming
topographic system: land that is levelled with high water table can be
waterlogged
Facts
By: Brenan
Canada has dropped from 3rd to 9th in the
world for total food exports.
In 2010, over 30% of Canada’s farms lost
money instead of making.
Two main strategic priorities for farmers are
lowering operating costs and improving quality
of the products in the market.
Farm debt levels are increasing
