Libya and the Maghreb
Basic Facts
Maghreb means “land
farthest west.” (Tunisia,
Algeria, and Morocco)
The people in all of these
countries are Arabicspeaking Muslims.
Landscape of north Africa
coastal areas have a
Mediterranean climate.
Away from the coast is the arid
climate of the Sahara: largest
hot desert in the world
no navigable rivers

due to no vegetation
plants in these areas adapt through
their roots and leaves.
Traditional way of life, many
people live on oases in the
interior:
central area saved for farming
houses are built around the
farming area in a circle
Blend of Cultures
Camels brought from Asia
allowed peoples north and
south of the Sahara to trade
using caravans.
There is a blend of African,
European, and Asian cultures
Berbers - original inhabitants of
North Africa
Phoenicians, Romans, and the
Arabs have controlled it
Muammar Gaddafi has been the
dictator of Libya since 1969. He
was killed in a recent uprising
