Great Britain
Great Britain
• Great Britain is an island off the coast of
continental Europe. It is the ninth largest
island in the world, and the third most
populous. Politically, Great Britain refers to a
number of surrounding islands, and the
territories of England, Scotland, and Wales.
Kingdom of Great Britain
• The Kingdom of Great Britain was a sovereign
state that existed from May 1, 1707 to
December 31, 1800. The state was created
with the Treaty of Union of 1706. It included
the whole island of Great Britain, and several
surrounding islands. A single parliament and
government controlled the kingdom.
United Kingdom
• On January 1, 1801, the kingdoms of Great
Britain and Ireland merged to create the
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. It
lasted until 1922, when the Irish Free State
left the United Kingdom, leading it to be
renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain
and Northern Ireland. Today, the United
Kingdom is very successful and has the world’s
sixth-largest economy by nominal GDP and
eighth-largest by purchasing power parity.
Great Britain at the Winter Olympics
• Great Britain is the team that enters athletes
from the United Kingdom. They have not been
very successful at the Winter Olympics. They
have won 21 medals overall, and have never
won more than four in a single Winter
Olympics. Altogether they have won eight
gold medals, three silver, and ten bronze.
Government
• Great Britain is a constitutional monarchy. The
hereditary monarchy is limited to little more
than performing ceremonial functions. Most
of the power is in Parliament, which is made
up of the House of Commons, the House of
Lords, and the crown.
People
• Great Britain has the fourth most people in
Europe. The English make up more than 80%
of the population, and the Scottish make up
about 10%. Also, there are smaller groups of
Irish and Welsh descent.
