Introduction
We think a modern and powerful nation should have a great
development in both soft power and hard power .
For soft power it needs to have its own special culture and be a
democratic country.
For hard power , it needs to have a great economic system and
have a well - developed industry in its country.
So we will follow our definition to figure out that is Japan a modern
& powerful nation .
Soft Power
Soft power

Soft power is describing the ability of a political body
to indirectly influent the behavior of other political
bodies.
Soft power ─ popular culture

Japanese popular culture not only reflects the
attitudes of the present day, but also provides a link
to the past.
popular culture ─ Manga

Manga are created in Japan.

Since the 1950s, manga has become a major part
of the Japanese publishing industry, representing
a $5.5 billion market in 2009.
Democracy
 Democracy is a government in which all the
citizens of a nation together determine public
policy and laws.
Democracy

Japan is one of the leading moderate democratic
countries in Asia.

The government of Japan follows the constitution. The
constitution is based on the respect for human rights.
Hard Power
Hard power

Hard power is describing using foreign
affairs and economy,etc. to influent other
political bodies.

We think hard power should include
Economic & foreign affairs.
Hard power ─ Economy

Some of the structural features for Japan's
economic growth developed in the Edo period.

During 1868, Japan expanded the market
economy .

Many of today's companies were found at the
time.
Japan became the most developed nation in Asia.


cars.

Tokyo – the capital city
Tokyo, both in the economic and population are the
world's largest metropolitan area.
 According to statistics, in 2008, the Tokyo population
over $3520 million.


Tokyo is also the world headquarters’ area of
up to Fortune 500 companies, 2009 has
reached 51, ​almost twice as Paris.

After World War II Japanese diplomatic policy has been
based on close partnership with the USA and the emphasis
on the international cooperation.

USA is Japan's closest ally . Both countries rely on close
economic ties for their wealth.

All postwar Japan government has relied on a close
relationship with USA.

Science and technology

Japan is a leading nation in scientific research

Nearly 700,000 researchers share a US$130 billion
research and development budget. Japan is the
third largest in the world.

That proved Japan spend lots of money & time to
develop High-tech goods
Modern ─ robot
 Japan leads the world in robotics production and
use, possessing more than half of the world's
industrial robots.
Modern ─ mobile phone

Japan also has its own brand, such as,
Sony , Sharp etc.

In 2012, the total no. of Japanese mobile
phone users is 101.7 million.

23.5% of Sharp's mobile phones’ users
are Japanese, this proved that Japanese
are pursued in fashion.
Space

Japan has also made headway into space exploration.

JAXA conducts space and planetary research and
development of rockets. It has developed a series of
rockets which can carrying 8-ton .
Nobel price

Japan is a world leader in scientific researches.

Japan has produced fifteen Nobel laureates in
physics, chemistry and medicine.
conclusion

In conclusion, we think that Japan is a powerful &
modern nation.

For its hard power, it has a great economic, only
behind the USA and China.

For its soft power, it has something that leading
other country ― democracy, also Japan’s culture
in recent year is towards to international.

Also, Japan is a well-developed nation. Its hightechnology proved that Japan is a modern country.
