The Food of Japan!
And you are learning with YoonSuk and Walter!
What is Japanese Food?
Japanese food
mainly consists of
Rice. “ Gohan” in
Japanese. It is usually
accompanied with
soup “おかず ”. It
comes with some fish,
meat, vegetable and
my all time favourite,
Tofu.
When Did the Style of Food
Change?
The style of traditional
food in Japan
changed when other
countries started
trading with Japan in
the 16th century when
Japan encountered
traders from Portugal.
How Did the Style Change?
During the 16th
century when the
Portugal traders
came, they were
introduced to fried
foods. At this point,
fried food was
uncommon in Japan.
They also started
eating sugar and
corn.
So Why Didn’t Japanese People
Eat Meat?
During the 6th century,
Buddhism became
the main religion in
Japan. And the eating
of meat and fish was
prohibited. (This
lasted for 1200
years.) People only
started eating meat
again after the Meiji
restoration.
What Are Some of the Food That
Have Been Introduced to Japan?
I’ll let the pictures
speak for them selves.
Why do Japanese People Live
Longer Than Other People?
Most Japanese
people in Japan live
longer because they
don’t eat much fatty
foods. They stick to a
diet of mainly rice,
fish and vegetables.
This results in less
deaths caused of high
blood pressure.
The Statistics of height gain in
Japan since 1870.
Most food in Japan
isn’t traditional, like
curry and spaghetti.
This all came from
foreign countries. But
they’re still just as
tasty! Here is a
statistic of the growth
of Japanese people
since 1870 to 1980.
The End, and a Movie
And here we have a
short documentary
of Walter and yoonsuk introducing
traditional Japanese
food. (And yeah,
we’re stuffing
ourselves with food
while you have to
watch.) Enjoy!
