Advertising
What is advertising?
Advertising is a form of
marketing communication used
to encourage, persuade, or
manipulate an audience to take
or continue to take some
action.
What is an
advertising campaign?
An advertising campaign is
a series of advertisements
that share a single idea and
theme. Advertising campaigns
appear in different media (TV,
radio, magazines) across a
specific time frame.
You will create
advertisements using the
product you chose for your
product placement film still.
What was your product?
Your Research Assignment
(Example: Pepsi)
First, research real ads for your
product. I Googled
“pepsi advertising campaign.”
Click on the “Images” search results.
Next, I made my search more specific
by Googling “pepsi magazine
advertising campaign.”
Look for ads that look recent.
AND look for ads that are similar to
each other.
Choose an ad campaign that you will
recreate with your own photos in
Photoshop.
Draw a Venn diagram and complete it
by listing similarities and differences
across the ads in the real campaign.
What is an ad spoof?
At first glance, an ad spoof looks
like an ad out of a real ad
campaign but when you look
closer it includes elements that
make fun of the product or
company being advertised.
Your Brainstorming
Assignment
At the end of this project you
will submit two final
Photoshopped ads featuring
your product:
1. Regular magazine ad
2. Ad spoof
But first you need to work on
your ideas…
For the rest of class, you will
sketch 5 ideas for your regular
magazine ad and create one final
full-color drawing. This ad should
look like it’s from a real ad
campaign for your product.
You will ALSO sketch 5 ideas for
your ad spoof design and create
one final full-color drawing. This
ad should also look like it’s from a
real ad campaign for your
product.
In total, that’s
10 sketches
and
2 full-page, full-color drawings
TIP:
Do the 5 sketches all on one side
of the paper and the final drawing
on the back.
That means you’ll turn in only 2
pages total with your 10 sketches
and 2 drawings on them.
No stick figures allowed!

HOMEWORK:
We will shoot the images for the
advertisements next week. Be
sure to bring all the props and
costumes you need. Don’t forget
to bring your product (the same
one you used in your film still).
Do Now:
Go to the Assignments page of
our website and download this
PowerPoint presentation
which is listed under today’s
date. Then research ad
campaigns for your product
before working on your ideas.
