BODY SYSTEMS THAT ARE IMPACTED BY ALCOHOL: A DEPRESSANT
Cardiovascular
(Heart)
Urinary (Kidneys)
Nervous (Brain)
Digestive (Liver)
BRAIN-NERVOUS SYSTEM
WHAT DO YOU THINK THIS SLIDE SHOWS ,
WRITE IN JOURNAL.
NERVOUS SYSTEM (BRAIN)
DEPRESSNANT: Reaches brain as soon after it is
consumed and depresses nerve activity.
Slows down Nervous System or large amounts of
alcohol may shut it down
Reduces inhibition, attention, memory, motor coordination
(speech) & emotional behavior.

Capillaries enlarge and give off excess heat
(pressure drops)
Body temperature decreases even though the
individual may feel flushed
HEART
Healthy Heart
Alcoholic Heart
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Causes stomach to produce too much gastric juice.
(nausea, vomiting & diarrhea)
Ulcers, gastritis & pancreatitis can occur with long
term use
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: STOMACH, LIVER, KIDNEY
Kidneys have increased urine production (trying to rid body of
alcohol)
Dehydration from cell expansion (thirst)
Oxidation in the liver (changes alcohol into water, carbon dioxide
½ ounce per hour) causing cirrhosis of the liver
ASCITES OF THE LIVER
Edema (water retention)
which accumulates in the
abdomen caused by
cirrhosis of the liver.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BODY WHEN SOMEONE IS HUNGOVER?
Symptoms:
Severe headaches, vomiting, weakness, nausea
Causes:
Irritation to CNS (nerves)
Dehydrates body cells
Increase of gastric juices irritate stomach lining
WHY 21?
Alcohol addiction sets in quickly in younger people.
Frontal lobe of the brain doesn’t fully develop until age 25
(judgment area of the brain is not yet mature)
Teenagers are more likely to be risk takers
Studies show more teenagers die while drinking then adults
BEING REAL WITH YOURSELF
Write in your journal your actual response:
What information do you have about body systems and
alcohol that would make you think twice about getting
into a car with someone who is intoxicated?
Write a good topic sentence.
Write a paragraph explaining why it would be a bad choice to
