Alcohols
Alcohols are a large, diverse family of substances with different names and a
variety of effects on skin. This can lead to some confusion among consumers
when they check ingredient listings on cosmetic labels to determine alcohol
content. Understanding “alcohol” is an important distinction since many products
consist largely of this ingredient - including after-shave lotion, bubble bath,
fragrances & cologne, deodorants, hair lacquer, liquid face powder, mouthwash,
nail polish, and suntan lotion.

The Good Alcohol
Natural Grain Alcohol/Ethyl
The “good” alcohol, ethyl alcohol or ethanol is manufactured by
fermenting starch, sugar, and other carbohydrates. It is clear,
colorless and flammable. Medicinally it is used externally as an
antiseptic and internally as a stimulant and hypnotic. To be
used in cosmetics, it must be denatured. It can be drying to skin
unless formulated in small amounts and balanced with other
appropriate ingredients.
Waxes that are Called Alcohols:
These can be derived from animals or plants. Chaé
uses the following alcohol thickeners from pure
vegetable sources.
•Cetyl Alcohol: A secondary emulsifier that thickens or
adds body to lotions
•Stearyl Alcohol: Dispensing agent, thickener, & antistatic
•Ceteraryl Alcohol: Forms a protective layer to keep skins
moisture from evaporating

Why the change?
Titanium Dioxide is naturally occurring and a fantastic
active for sunscreens, however in our effort to

can protect the skin from sun damage LONGER than

Why Use Physical Blockers
Such as Zinc and Titanium?
An Environmental Working Group study shows that “consumers who use
sunscreens without zinc and titanium are likely exposed to more UV radiation and
greater numbers of hazardous ingredients” than consumers relying on zinc and
titanium products for sun protection.
“…Consumers using sunscreens without zinc and titanium [are] exposed to an
average of 20% more UVA radiation - with increased risks for UVA-induced skin
damage, premature aging, wrinkling, and UV-induced immune system damage than consumers using zinc- and titanium-based products.
“[Chemical blocker sunscreens] contain four times as many high hazard
ingredients known or strongly suspected to cause cancer or birth defects, to
disrupt human reproduction or damage the growing brain of a child.
“They also contain more toxins on average in every major category of health
harm considered: cancer (10% more), birth defects and reproductive harm (40%
more), neurotoxins (20% more), endocrine system disruptors (70% more), and
chemicals that can damage the immune system (70% more).”

Sunscreens that are chemical blockers absorb
UV radiation within a specific wavelength,
thereby diminishing the penetration of UV
radiation through the epidermis.
Physical Blockers
Sunscreens that are physical blockers work by
reflecting or scattering UV radiation. Physical
blockers are effective against both UVA and
UVB radiation. They are made of inert metals
that sit on the skin and are not absorbed.

Q: My sister and I have been using the Laundry Liquid for approx. 3-4 months
and we have noticed that our clothes are not looking white or bright any longer.
What are we doing wrong?
A: Chaé Organics Laundry Liquid does not contain any toxic chemicals such as
whiteners or brighteners that are found in regular laundry detergents. Chaé’s
Laundry Liquid loosens/breaks down oil, grease and dirt particles with gentle
treatment for even delicate fabrics. It also contains no xeno-estrogens, making it

Q: Will you be coming out with a fabric softener for use in the washer/dryer, or is
your laundry liquid by itself sufficient for softening? Maria M.
A: The Laundry Liquid alone leaves clothes feeling soft and comfortable,
however without a fabric softener, clothes can be left slightly static. We suggest
using some sort of laundry balls in the dryer to reduce static. These are
accessible in the laundry isle of most stores.
