Detector Control System at the GIF++
A. Polini, M. Romano (AIDA+INFN Bologna)
on behalf of WP 8.5.3 group
Gif++ User Meeting 17/02/2015
Outline
• Status
• Issues with Racks
• Next Steps and requirements

Status
• User DCS equipment has been moved to the
service area
• Racks depth not adequate (for a long term project)
– can fit equipment put cables on rear side sticking out
• Power distribution insufficient (urgent fix needed).
– Placement of plugs not convenient.
– Need more plugs.
– Neighboring rack with no plugs at all!
• Network connectivity also scarce (but can live with
it for the moment using private switch/hub).
– 2 RJ-45 plugs for 3 racks is a bit on low side.

Next Steps
• One important aspect for DCS functionality is the storage of the
monitored quantities
– Detector parameters, voltage currents, rates, environmental
variables etc.
– Do not expect large amount of data ~10 MB/hour
• Had preliminary contact and discussions in July 2014 for Central Oracle
data archiving (M. Gonzales, Martin J.) but no further steps so far
• This is likely a common requirement also from the global GIF++ DCS.
Maybe common solution available.
• Given the present resource and manpower need to understand if
within GIF++ some support from IT can be provided for
– system maintenance
– Setup of terminal service

Setup of the rack in service area
CAEN crate,
controlled by
the branch
controller
One mainframe containing:
• An HV board
• A branch controller
4 Dell PE-1950 PCs
Installed software
• Windows 2008 Server R2
• WinCC-OA
• A WinCC-OA project running on a
machine, with basic DCS
functionalities

View from the back
The PCs and Mainframe barely
fit in it
A switch (provided by ATLAS
SysAdmin) is used to connect
the 4 pcs and mainframe
The connectors stick out from
the rack

Detail on the power strip
At least 3 outlets are blocked by the
mainframe
We didn’t find any alternative placement
to avoid this issue
Same for the PCs.
