Transformers
β’ Transformers contain a
primary winding and a
secondary winding:
β Primary Winding:
Connected to the source
of energy (power supply)
β Secondary Winding:
Connected to the load
Transformer Voltage
β’ Windings can be used to scale voltage:
ππ ππ
=
ππ ππ
β Ex: a 120V input into a 2250 turn primary coil
produces 26.7V output onto a 500 turn secondary
coil
Other Instances of Inductance
β’ Solenoid
β Often used to open
physical devices
β’ Toroid
β ferrite core helps:
β’ Achieve high inductances
β’ Contain magnetic field
And can be tailored to a
specific frequency range
Notes on Inductance
β’ In the case of a transformer, we like
mutual inductance (coupling)
β’ If we have two solenoids, we might not
want them coupled
β In this case, it is best to have them
positioned perpendicular to each other
Diodes (PN Junction)
β’ Semiconductor device
β Anode and cathode
β’ Non-linear resistance
β’ Conduct in only one direction
β’ βKneeβ or βturn onβ voltage
β Silicon: 0.6-0.7V
β Germanium: 0.3V
β Light Emitting Diode (LED): 1.7V

Rectification
β’ Means for converting an AC signal into a DC signal
β’ Half Wave
β Only half (180 degrees) of each cycle is rectified
β’ Full Wave
β Each cycle is completely rectified (360 degrees)
β If not filtered, this appears as a pulse train of DC signals at
twice the frequency of the input!
β’ Rectifier should be rated:
β Minimum Peak-Inverse-Voltage should be twice that of the
normal peak output voltage of the supply
Transistors
β’ Semiconductor device (3 layers)
β’ Uses
β Voltage or current signal to control current
flow (switch)
β Amplifiers (Gain controls amplification)
β’ Something
Types of Transistors
β’ BJT: Bipolar Junction Transistor
β’ FET: Field Effect Transistor
β’ JFET: Junction Field Effect Transistor
β’ MOSFET: Metal Oxide Semiconductor FET

Transformers
β’ Two parallel inductors
can induce a current
in each other
β This is called βmutual
inductanceβ
β’ No electron passes
between the two
inductors
Power Supplies
β’ Convert 120VAC to 13.8V DC or some
other output voltage
β’ Functionally, they have a
β Transformer for stepping the voltage down
β A diode bridge to produce full-wave
rectification
β An electrolytic capacitor to smooth output
voltage
Power Supplies
Ground Loop
β’ To avoid ground loops, make sure all
ground connections are connected to a
single point
β Symptom: reports of a βhumβ in your
transmitted signal
Lightning Safety
β’
The biggest reason for having lightning protection is to reduce fire
hazards!
β’
To protect your station:
β Disconnect antenna cables
β Unplug AC cords
β Stop using equipment and move to another room
β’
Donβt climb a tower during a lightning storm
Oscilloscope
β’ Measures complex waveforms
β V or I against time
β Contains amplifiers for vertical and
horizontal channels
β’ Useful for checking:
β CW waveform
β Radio Frequency (RF) envelope of output
signal, through attenuator and vertical
channel
Voltage (RMS)
β’ An AC signal dissipates the same
power as a DC signal at VRMS.
ππ
ππ = 0.707ππ

β’ Something
Circuit Construction
β’ Rosin core solder is the best for radio
construction
β’ Cold solder joints = bad connection
β Grainy or dull surface
β’ Weβll do some soldering tonight!
