Data Center World – Certified Vendor Neutral
Each presenter is required to certify that their
presentation will be vendor-neutral.
As an attendee you have a right to enforce this
policy of having no sales pitch within a session by
alerting the speaker if you feel the session is not
being presented in a vendor neutral fashion. If the
issue continues to be a problem, please alert Data
Center World staff after the session is complete.

How a Blue-Chip Company Mined for ‘Gold’ in its
Data Centers Using DCIM Tools
Learn how DCIM tools are helping a blue-chip
media/entertainment giant to find and keep track of all its data
center assets and resources (including power, space and
connections), in order to support the compute requirements
for its very fast-growing operations. By mining for detailed
information on data center infrastructure resources, the
company has uncovered resources not being used, as well
as other valuable nuggets of knowledge on data center
operations— information that is helping to create more
efficient operations, helping to save energy and reduce
service deployment costs.

Oh BTW….
We currently have over 20 million subscribers
depending on you for their voice, data, and video.
And we’d like to grow to number to over 30 million!
“So what’s your plan son?”
6
Typical “Regional” datacenter footprint
•
•
•
•
•
48 cabinets
10kW/cab (50A @ 208V)
500kW total load
48 fiber + 48 copper / cabinet
~10,000 total connections/ build
Tip #1 : Be crystal clear on the problems you need to solve
7
The Challenge
• 18 Regional data centers in operation
….adding 10 more
• 60 Local data centers
…upgrade 20 sites
• NEW Total IT Load - 170 MW
Tip #2 : Understand your current processes & desired outcome
8
High Level Goals of this (any) project…
•
•
•
•
•
Simplify planning
Clarify operations
Completely address organizational needs
Be simple, intuitive, and readily adopted
Be used
Tip #3 : Don’t get caught in feature comparison (see Tip #1)
9
Goals of this project…
Better Utilization of Resources
• Find Stranded Capacity
• Use real time loads of the cabinets to update
design assumptions helps release stranded
capacity.
• Know exactly how many servers can safely be
put in the cabinet
Tip #4 : Identify a team to own & maintain the system
10
Goals of this project…
Improve our people efficiency & speed of
deployment
• Move away from a collection of excel files
and Visio drawings to a SQL database –
“Single version of the truth”
• Eliminate the swivel chair effect
Tip #5 : Start small and build on success
11
Results
• 10 Local data center site - upgrades
• 11 Regional sites deployed
Tip #6 : Use the product for project planning….DON’T wait
12
Results
• Uncovered the stranded
capacity
Power consumption and load
balancing is now a real life number
not an assumption
• Thresholds and alerting in
place to provide a precise
early warning and planning
system
Tip #7 : Expect integration, make sure the platform is open
13
Results
Improved our people efficiency &
speed of deployment –
“Move from a collection of
excel files and Visio drawings
to a SQL database with a
single version of truth and a
single pane of glass for all
users to use.”
Tip #8 : Ensure people are trained and regularly monitor use
14
What we continue to learn…
High value resources are always over taxed
Data is never perfect on Day 1
DCIM implementations take time
You never fully understand the gaps until you put
your process (and assumptions) to the test
• Goals are refined over the course of the project
•
•
•
•
Tip #9 : Ensure people are trained and regularly monitor use
15
3 Key Things You Have Learned During this Session
1. Don’t wait to use the tool
2. Resource the project
3. Get partners that are all 100% vested in your
success
Tip #10 : Partner with a reliable, experienced and trusted vendor
