What is an ANTEcedent?
– Ante – means before (Anti – means against)

Sentence Punctuation Patterns
Title: “Opener/ Interrupter/ Closer”
Copy the following sentence patterns down & memorize them:

Sentence = independent clause
Opener, interrupter, closer = dependent clauses, &
phrases
Consider this analogy.
– ESSENTIAL MEANING - Visualize… a hot fudge sundae
with whipped cream and a cherry on top! The whipped
cream and cherry are NECESSARY for the total hot fudge
sundae experience.
– NON-ESSENTIAL MEANING - Visualize… a hot fudge
sundae with whipped cream and a cherry on top. The
whipped cream and cherry are NOT NECESSARY for the
sundae experience. It’s all about the hot fudge. Some whip
cream and a cherry might be used, but they are not
necessary for the experience.
Sentence Pattern Examples:

morning, for coffee.

LINKING VERBS – Replace the verbs w/ is/are. If the
sentence makes sense, it is a linking verb.
Predicate NOUN – renames the subject (SUB = PN)
Predicate ADJ – describes the subject

answer, decide if it is true or false. The “false”
answer is the “NOT” answer.
• Process of elimination. Consider what you know
and cross out every answer that is incorrect.
