September 18, 2007
Best Scenario: BedZed, UK
• Beddington Zero Energy Development in
Wallington, Surrey
– Buildings all have solar panels and “wind catchers”
• 109kW of PV for 82 units
– 100 unit development is powered by a 130kW
combined heat and power biomass plant
–Parking spaces are
expensive
•Community has a carpool scheme and plugin spots for electric
cars
–700 people signed up
for future zero energy
housing

Best Scenario: Dyfi, Wales
• Ecodyfi, mid-Wales, UK
• Community owned and developed
renewable energy:
–120kW from hydropower
–75KW and 340KW
wind turbines
–Around 40kW of
installed solar power
–More in
development

Worst Scenario: Linfen, China
• Linfen city in Shanxi, China
– World’s most polluted city for many years
• Home to a hundreds of coke ovens, coal
processing plants,
pharmaceutical
factory, among
others
•Residents suffer
from chronic
respiratory
problems, high rate
of cancer

How does Albacete fit?
• Albacete can strive to:
– Make new developments as green as BedZed,
encouraging efficient buildings
– Build urban solar and wind generation
– Development biomass energy and combined
heat and power generation
– Decrease coal usage by co-firing coal with
biomass
– Development cleaner methods of transportation
such as public transit that runs on natural gas or
biofuels, and eventually, even hydrogen
Data for energy analysis
• Which existing class GIS data would be
needed?
–
–
–
–
Solar data
Biofuels data
Any existing energy-use data
Land-use data
• Additional required data
– Location and voltage of transmission lines
– Location of transformers
– Location and size of wind farms, individual
turbines
– Location, size, and type of coal power plants
– Location of gas stations (for integrating
hydrogen cars)
– Locations of renewable manufacturing plants
