HUAWEI MARINE NETWORKS CO., LTD.
What is standard?
E/O comms interface
Sensors
Type, sensitivity, size, mounting method?
method of connection-electrical or optical?
Location relative to repeater
Software
Language?
Interface/ tools
Method of connection to
sensor/repeater?
Operating voltage/current?
Operating system/protocol – ethernet?
Baud rate? / Size of PCB’s?
Operating environment, heat
dissipation, hermeticity, humidity,etc?

E/O interface/comms module Inside or outside
the main repeater housing – The big question?

Inside:

Consumes amplifier space impacting repeater capacity?

Adds “in-service” reliability risk to repeater?


Increased complexity and build time of repeater?

Benefits from proven repeater housing mechanical design

Simplifies integration

Flexibility on choice of which repeater is instrumented and when


should module fail during cable integration/install – deploy or not?
No redundant electronics overhead
Outside

Divorces repeater from science

Repeater only needs to support fibre /power penetration of bulkhead (proven)and tap into
transmission via passive optics

Science Set containing E/O interface and comms module can be built offline and delivered tested

Adds additional complexity to integration process – impact to loading time/ship costs?

Science Set integral with Pressure sensors and Accelerometers, lead outs to Temperature sensor?

Temperature sensors remote mounted to avoid thermal pick up from adjacent electronics.
Page 3
Bulkhead mounted sensors – Non starter!


Pro’s

No impact to integration time

Integrated solution removes need for further external mechanics
Con’s


Space envelope restrictive

Potential damage to sensors

Limited available bulkhead real estate
Hermetic sealing of bulkhead compromised - would need
special solution for sensors – testing and validation for 25 yrs?

Thermal pick up of temperature sensors from repeater
electronics

Potential space limitation within repeater for E/O
interface/comms module

Adds risk to repeater if E/O interface/comms module fails

Cannot change out module if failure during cable integration

Modular sensor set
Use of standard repeater with adaption for double penetrator bulkhead, Internal Unit
contains only passive optics tap into transmission fibres at O/head wavelength. No active
components therefore minimal reliability impact to repeater
5-10m?
Independent composite optical /power
feed to sensor protected with main
transmission cable
Utilising proven Branching Unit
double hermetic penetration
technology it is possible to provide
independent composite power and
optics to the science module
Pressure plus
accelerometer
sensors packaged
with E/O/comms
module.
Transmission cable
uninterrupted
without mechanical
break out.
Temperature sensors mounted in buffer and/or
outboard cable protection with protected
cabling back to E/O comms module to avoid
temperature pick up from module electronics

Sensor module to repeater connectivity
Repeater
Cable termination to main
transmission cable
Standard industry joint between repeater feed
through pigtail and main transmission cable
identical at each end of the repeater
Independent composite optical and low
voltage electrical feed from second
bulkhead penetration routed with main
transmission cable direct to sensor
module without break out in termination.
Sensor and
electronics module
Main
transmission
cable
Main transmission cable passes through
centre of sensor module without mechanical
break out. Transmission path is uninterrupted
& mechanical integrity is maintained
