Unit 3
Plants
不可用that.
词可以用who (m), which或that,也可以省略。
Examples
They are the friends with whom I went to the
botanical gardens.
James Russell is a man for whom I have the
greatest respect.
He only published one book of which this is the
last surviving copy.
I will show you the way to the library from
which I borrowed the novel.
Relative clauses with prepositions and whom or which
We can put a preposition in front of whom or
which at the beginning of a relative clause. This
pattern is rather formal.
This is the plant on which people can stand.
Look at these photographs from your trip to the
countryside. You must explain these photos to a
friend. Explain each photo using a relative clause
with whom or which. Follow the example.

people celebrate the coming of a new year.

play and relax.
Last Friday, when I was on business in Beijing,
was my parents’ 30th wedding anniversary.
The travel agency, where he got all the information
he needed, is just round the corner.
He clearly remembered the days when (=during
which) he conducted the investigation.
That is the travel agency where (=from which)
he got all the information he needed.
Relative clauses with why, when or where
We can make restrictive
relative clauses with why, when
or where after some nouns, as
in the list below.
