What is a clause?
• A clause is a group of words that contains a
subject and a verb within a sentence.
• *Independent clause:
*Also called main clause because it can be a
complete sentence on its own.
• **Subordinate clause: (**Before he trained for
football,) *he worked out daily.
**Also called dependent because it depends on the
main clause for meaning.
What is an independent or main
clause?
• An independent clause contains a subject and a
verb and is a complete thought. Stands on its own.
• A compound sentence has two independent
clauses connected by a comma and a coordinating
conjunction.
• List of conjunctions: and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet
Ex.[ Bob jumped up], and [Mary ran into him.]
Bob loved Mary, yet Mary loved Joe.

Compound-Complex Sentence
• Although he smoked, he ran five miles a day
and he climbed two flights of stairs.
• Underline subjects once and verb phrases
twice. Put parentheses around the
subordinate clause. Put squares around the
independent/main clauses.
