Lesson 26
How do living things get their
energy?
You need energy to live. So do
plants.
All living things need energy to carry
out their life processes.
Does anyone know how your car gets
its energy?
It burns a fuel, just like plants and
animals!
Energy is released when oxygen
combines with a fuel.
Plants and animals use glucose as a
fuel.
Glucose is a simple sugar.
Glucose and oxygen combine, and
energy is made.
Making energy by combining digested
food (glucose) and oxygen is called…..
Who can remember?? We have used
the word since October!
A candy to the first to remember!
Respiration is combining oxygen with
glucose to make energy.
Now, don’t forget it!
Where does glucose come from?
Animals ingest food.
Some food is
changed to glucose
during digestion.
The body uses this glucose to make
energy.
What about plants???
Plants make their own food through a
process called photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis takes place in the leaves
of green plants.
The cells of plants have chloroplasts.
Chloroplasts are filled with
chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is a green substance
needed for a plant to make food.
Chlorophyll traps light energy from
the sun.
Light energy is needed for a plant to
make its own food.
Plants also need water and carbon
dioxide to make food.
Water enters a plant through the root.
Most carbon dioxide enters a plant
through the tiny holes in the leaves.
Stomata are the tiny holes in leaves.
Think of respiration like this:
Glucose + oxygen
carbon dioxide
& water &
energy
Think of photosynthesis
like this:
With chlorophyll and sunlight
Carbon dioxide
and water
glucose and oxygen
Now let’s look at them together.
Glucose
and water
carbon dioxide+ water +
energy
Carbon dioxide + water
What do you notice?????
glucose
and water
Isn’t it a great relationship we have
with plants????
