“5-Minute Prep” For
Plants
Plants and Their Parts
Basic Needs
Basic Needs – The Big Ideas
•
•
•
Plants need air, water, nutrients, and light.
Plants use energy from sunlight to make their own food
from water and carbon dioxide in a process called
photosynthesis.
Plants have systems to move nutrients and water
through them.
Basic Needs – Prior Knowledge
Students will have knowledge of plants prior to this study. It
will help for students to use the Fun-damental, Getting to
Know Plants. It will also help if they have:
– Seen different kinds of plants and flowers.
– Planted a seed.
– Learned that plants have parts that serve different
purposes.
Basic Needs – Common Misconceptions
• Plants don’t move, so they are not really alive.
–Reality: Plants are alive and possess the
characteristics of living things. They grow and
develop, reproduce, obtain and use energy, and
respond and adapt to their environment. They are
made of cells.
Basic Needs – Using DE Science Content
When you close this presentation, you can review the
following recommended resources for Basic Needs.
• Reading Passage: The Oldest Living Tree on Earth
• eBooks: Water Flows Up
• Video Segment: All Living Things Need Food to Survive
Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for
hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them
through the browser or search feature.

coloring and a white daisy. Ask them to follow the
procedure described in the passage.
– Have students discuss observations and record them
to share with the entire class.
Basic Needs – Instructional Ideas
• Watch the video segment, All Living Things Need Food
to Survive.
– Give each pair of students a microscope and leaves
from different plants.
– Ask students to observe the leaves.
