Word Work
hopping
You can read this word because you know the
last consonant of the base word was doubled
before –ing was added. What consonant was
doubled? What is the base word? What is the

hoping
You can read this word because you know that
some base words end with silent “e” and that
the “e” is dropped before an ending is added.
What is the base word? What is the word?
Word Work
Let’s build some words. I am distributing a
practice sheet. You will notice the sheet
has been divided into four columns.
Base words are located in the first
column. The base words are hug, frame,
and step. You will have to add inflected
endings –s, -ed, and –ing to these base
words. Write the word with the inflected
ending in the appropriate column. Notice
I gave you an example: smile, smiles,
smiled, and smiling.
Vocabulary
The time is a quarter to three.
We learned that a quarter is a coin
worth 25 cents. Today I want to talk
about another meaning for quarter.
Quarter can mean one-fourth of
something. A quarter is one-fourth
of an hour, or 15 minutes. Can you
think of other ways to use quarter to
mean one-fourth of something?

Comprehension
When you read a passage, recognizing
how things are alike and different is
often important. Sometimes there are
clue words, such as same and
changes, that help you see likenesses
and differences. Look for these words
in today’s passage. But also examine
the pictures for likenesses and
differences among the things
discussed.
Read or Listen to a Passage
Today’s selection shows coins
and bills from different
countries. Pay attention to
how the coins and bills are
alike and different. Let’s
