NATIVE
AMERICANS
OF THE
NORTHEAST:
THE WOODLANDS
Farming was an important source of food.
The main crops were corn, beans,
white corn, and squash. They also ate
berries, nuts and other wild plants.
They hunted these animals for food:
pheasants, deer, bear, rabbit, woodchuck,
skunk, turtle, and squirrel. These animals
came from the water: fish, lobster,crabs,
wild duck and geese.

The Woodlands lived up by the four Great Lakes.
Their home was called a longhouse. The longhouse could hold
more than one family and they put up walls in a little space. The
longest house was 150 feet. The longhouses were rectangular.
Theyhad beds made out of grass and leaves and skins of animals.
The top was hollow.

The girls used to learn from their
mothers to cook food.
Some of the food was fish, corn bread,
vegetables and fruits.

The Woodlands Indians
got sticks and poked the fish so
they can eat them.
They hunted buffalo for food and
clothing. The Indians also ate
berries, nuts and wild plants.
They also grew corn,
beans and squash.

The Iroquois Native Americans lived in the
northeast, which we call
New York State today.

The Woodland Native Americans
planted corn, squash, beans and
nuts.

ate bears, deer, rabbits, woodchucks,
salmon, skunks and turtles.

feathers. They earned one when

to make bows and swords to kill their food.

The deer was a main source
of clothing. The skins were
tanned and made into
clothing and shoes.
The people dressed simply.
Everyone had moccasins.

Woodland Native Americans had ceremonial clothing
and everyday clothing made of deerskin.

There were three kinds of houses:
long houses,
dome- shaped houses
and wigwams.

Wigwams are round houses made from
little trees, bark and grasses.

The Woodland Native Americans built canoes of birch bark to
help them travel about. The canoes were light and easy to carry.

Native Americans of the Woodlands cut down
trees and take everything out of the tree
to make a canoe.
