Plant Parts
&
Their Functions
Presentation by Cristi Mauney
Science SCS 1.03 Analyze plant structure for specific functions:
-Growth
-Survival
-Reproduction
Essential Questions:
What are the parts of a plant?
What is the job of each plant part?
SeedThe first stage in
the growth of
many plants.
Many plants
reproduce, or
make more plants
like themselves,
by forming seeds.
RootsPart of the plant found underground. Roots
hold a plant in the ground. They take in water
and minerals the plant needs from the soil.
StemConnects the
roots with the
leaves of the
plant. It
carries water
from the
roots to other
plant parts.
You may have seen a thin
green stem on a flower.
The thick, woody trunks
and branches of trees
are also stems.
Leaves
Plant parts that grow out of the stem.
Leaves take in the air and light a plant
needs. Most plants have many leaves.
Plants are also able to make their own food.
This process is called photosynthesis.
It takes place in the leaves of the plant.
FlowerThe reproductive part
of the plant. The
flower attracts bees
and butterflies to aid in
pollination. Produces
the plant’s seeds.
Now let’s
review!
Can you name each plant part?

Which plant part connects the
roots to the other plant parts
and carries water through the
plant?
a. leaves
b. flower
c. stem
Which plant part takes the
water and minerals the plant
needs from the soil?
a. stem
b. roots
c. leaves
Which plant part attracts bees
and butterflies to aid in
pollination and produce seeds
for the reproduction of plants?
a. flower
b. leaves
a. stem
This part takes in the air and
light that the plant needs. This
is also the place where the
plant makes its own food. What
part of the plant am I?
a. seed
b. leaves
c. roots
This is the first stage in the
life of many plants. I am
created in the flower of the
plant. What am I?
a. seed
b. root
c. pollination
Plants come in all shapes and
sizes, but they have the same
parts that do the same jobs.
