stem
roots
Stem
The stem supports the leaves
and carries food and water
from the roots up to the
leaves.
Back
Leaves
The leaves make the food for
the plant by using sunlight.

Flower
Daisy
Petals!
The flower makes the seeds
that will grow into new plants.

Roots
The roots grow down into the
soil. They drink up the water
from the ground.

There are all sorts of
shapes and colors
that leaves on a plant
can have!
Food We Get
From Plants
Tea! The top 2 leaves
are snipped from tea
bushes. Did you know
a tea bush can live for
50-100 years?
Pumpkins! They grow up
from the ground. Did you
know that some
pumpkins can get up to
50 pounds?
Apples! Apple trees can
be found all over the
place! Watch out for
worms. 

MMM! Chocolate. Cocoa
beans come from cacao
(ka-KOW) trees. Did you
know that 70% of cocoa
beans are found in
Africa?
Peanuts! The peanut
plant grows yellow
flowers that last only one
day. Did you know that
you can grow your own
by planting a raw peanut
in the ground?

Photosynthesis
Plants need to eat food too! The way that
plants eat is through photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis uses three things…the sun,
water, and carbon dioxide (air).
The sunlight comes and hits the leaves,
the air comes in through little holes in the
plant and the water comes up from the
roots. These all mix together with
chlorophyll to make the food (sugar or
glucose) for the plant to eat!

bugs actually help
plants too!)

Things to do at home
Go on
 Take a walk around the neighborhood and
look for plants and their parts.
 Collect samples of many different types of
leaves. Make a collection of the leaves
that you find. Dry the leaves between
sheets of newspaper. Put a heavy book on
top and leave them for a week or more.
Tape the leaves to sheets of construction
paper or iron the leaves between sheets of
wax paper. (Before using an iron, ask an
adult to help you!) Then look at the
different shapes of the leaves.
 Have a tasting party. Sample raw or
cooked root vegetables such as carrots,
beets, turnips, rutabagas, or radishes.
Pennsylvania’s First Grade Science Standards:
3.3. Biological Sciences
A. Know the similiarities and differences of living things.
- describe basic needs of plants
B. Know that living things are made up of parts that have specific functions
- know that different parts of a living thing work together to make the organism function
