•They sold: spices, cloth, glass, steel and
carpets.
•They bought: rubies, silk, ivory, gold, and
slaves.
•They also traded crops: sugar, rice, lemon,
spinach, oranges, saffron, plums, and cotton.
Crops are things that grow and are used for food
or making items.

•Arabic became the language of trade, this
made it easier for Muslims.
•Muslim rulers provided merchants with
coins to make trade easier
•Muslims kept detailed records of business
transactions…they invented banking!

•Cairo, Baghdad and Damascus were all on
major trade routes

of worship. Mosques also served as schools
