What is breakfast and
why do we need it?

• Pupils to mind map what they think the word
breakfast means and why breakfast is an
important meal.
• Discuss that some schools have a breakfast club.

Breakfast is the first meal of the day, which is
usually eaten in the morning.
The name comes from the concept that you have
not eaten while sleeping, so you are fasting during
that time, and break the fast with the meal.

It helps you digest your food. You find fibre in lots
of food like cereals, fruit, bread and vegetables.
Iron is good for the blood. Calcium is good for
your bones. Minerals are in lots of foods, but are
especially in fresh fruit and vegetables.
Vitamins are good for keeping your body healthy.
They are good for your skin, bones and teeth.
They are mostly found in dairy products (milk,
eggs and butter), fresh fruit and vegetables.

balanced
diet?

A Balanced Diet
You must have carbohydrate, protein, fat,
vitamins, minerals and fibre in the correct
proportions. If there is not enough protein, you
will not be able to grow properly and you will not
be able to repair yourself i.e. wounds will not
heal properly. If you do not have enough energy
containing foods you will feel very tired because
you will not have enough energy. If you have too
much energy containing foods you will become
overweight.

• Write a formal letter to local supermarkets asking to visit to look
at a range of breakfast products and sample some products.
• Pupils to sample a range of breakfast products and comment on
their taste and record which food groups they belong to.
•Record nutritional information for a variety of breakfast
products.
• Carry out a school survey to find out which are the most popular
breakfast products in the school. Analyse results and display as
graphs.
