The imperative
Notes #7
What is the imperative


Imperative verb forms are used to command
someone to do something and to make
suggestions.
For this reason, you can only use the
imperative in the “nous”, “vous” and “tu”
forms. (after all, you can’t command your self
to do something)
Formation




We can only use the imperative in the “tu”, “vous”,
and “nous” forms. To make the imperative, you just
use the present tense of the conjugate verb, without
the subject pronoun in front.
Ex: Finis le devoir!=finish the homework
Ex: Finissez-vous le devoir!=finish the homework
Ex: Finissons le devoir!=Let’s finish the homework
Exception
For “er” verbs, like “parler” you will drop the
“s” in the “tu” form, from the imperative form.
Remember, the “tu” form of “er” verbs ends in
“es” Ex: Tu parles.
We drop this “s” in the command:
Ex: Parle français!=speak French!

Negative


To form the negative, put “ne(n’)” before the
verb and “pas after it.
Ex: N’allez pas tout droit!= Don’t go straight
ahead.
