Overview
- Purpose: Weight Loss surgery
- Restricts the amount of food the stomach can
hold

- Mostly performed by minimally invasive
History
- 1950s - Jejunoileal Bypass
- First operations for the purpose of weight loss
- Many complications that resulted in the required reversal of the procedure
- 1960s - Gastric Bypass
- Developed by Drs. Mason and Ito
- Inspired from partial stomach removal for ulcers
- 1978 - Adjustable Gastric Band
When It’s Used
- BMI must be greater than 40
- BMI of 35-40 with conditions
such as high BP, diabetes,
asthma
- BMI of 30-35 with diabetes or
metabolic syndrome
Types
- Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)
- stomach divided into two parts to create small stomach pouch and small intestine is brought up
to new stomach pouch
- Sleeve Gastrectomy
- removes approx. 75-80% of stomach, resulting in a sleeve-like/tube-like structure
- Adjustable Gastric Band
- slow consumption of food with an inflatable band around upper part of stomach
