Białowieża National Park (Polish:
Białowieski Park Narodowy) is a National
Park in Poland.
The total area of the park is 152.2 square
kilometres .
It is located 62 km southeast of Białystok
(Poland).
It is home to the world's largest population of
European bison (Polish: żubr), the continent's
heaviest land animals.
There is a border crossing for hikers and cyclists
within the forest.
History
The park's formal beginning was the Forest
Reserve inspectorate (Polish: Rezerwat)
established in 1921. The inspectorate was
transformed into the National Park in
Białowieża on 11 August 1932 by the Second
Polish Republic. After World War II, the
forest was divided between the People's
Republic of Poland and the Belarusian SSR of
the Soviet Union. The People's Republic of
Poland reopened the Białowieża National
Park in 1947.
The idea of creating a national park locally
is about 200 years old.
However, the genuine protection efforts
which are being continued today are
centuries older.
Wildlife
Bialowieza Forest is the habitat for vast as
the climate zone number of animal species.
Starting from invertebrates: molluscs, worms,
spiders, insects and many others, to the
vertebrates: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds
and mammals - previously found in the
forest presence of more than 12 thousands
of species of animals. In Poland there are
about 35-40 thousand. It is estimated that
puszczańska fauna is diagnosed in about 50%,
so the actual number of species inhabiting
this forest massif can count about 25,000.
Białowieża National Park is one of the
biggest tourist atractions in Poland, every
year over 140000 tourists visit it.
