This micrograph reveals submucosal hemorrhage in the small intestine in a case of fatal human anthrax (hematoxylin-eosin stain,
magnification x240). The first symptoms of gastrointestinal (GI) anthrax are nausea, loss of appetite, bloody diarrhea, and fever,
followed by severe stomach pain. One-fourth to more than half of GI anthrax cases lead to death. Note the associated arteriolar
