The Digestive System
Food enters
the body
Food is
broken down
into nutrients
Food
used
by body
Wastes leave
body
3 Functions of the Digestive System
What it DOES:
• 1. Food is broken down into what the body can
use
• 2. Nutrients are absorbed by (taken into) the
blood and carried throughout the body
• 3. Wastes are eliminated from (taken out of) the
body

Do Now: packet p 2
•What substances does
your body need to take
in from food to survive?
• (Hint: There are 6 things.)
You are What You Eat!
Name of nutrient____________
Use your textbook to answer the questions:
What foods provide this nutrient?

What specific parts of the digestive system are used to digest this nutrient?
Describe how the body digests this nutrient.

Do NOW
In your packet p 12, list which essential substances you think might be found in each
food item

Digestive System Picture Comparison Notes
Directions: For each of the object below, write the name of
the part of the digestive system the object represents in the
parentheses. Then, make a couple of brief notes explaining
how each object represents that part of the digestive system.

DO NOW
Using your ruler, find the area to the nearest whole
cm2 of one surface of the Lego cube.
Hint: Area = length x width
When you finish, find the area of ALL the surfaces.
If you broke up the cube would there be more
surface area or the same amount?
Surface area is the measure of how much exposed area a solid object has or the area of all of the
outside surfaces of a three-dimensional object.
A cube has six square faces. Like dice. Let’s flatten the cube out.
If each of those faces is 3 inches by 3 inches, then the area of each face is
3 × 3 = 9 square inches. And since there are six of them, the total surface area is
9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 54 square inches.
Do Now
• Discuss with your elbow buddy: Your stomach
and esophagus use muscles to break up food.
Why is this necessary in the stomach and the
esophagus, once you have already swallowed
food?
• Use the Lego cube to help you.
Do Now:
• Predict three foods which contain starch.
See if your elbow buddy agrees with you.
Starch is a complex carbohydrate. You may
need to check your notes for the kinds of
foods which contain carbohydrates.
Do Now:
PUT on apron – tie a bow.
Predict which of these foods contain starch:
Pasta, apple, potato, cabbage, cracker, bread, water, lettuce
See if your elbow buddy agrees with you.
Starch is a complex carbohydrate. You may need to check
your notes for the kinds of foods which contain
carbohydrates.
Do NOW
PUT on apron – tie a bow.
Make a prediction:
1.
2.
Does a chewed up cracker contain starch?
Does a chewed up cracker contain more sugar or less sugar than
a non-chewed up cracker?
See if your elbow buddy agrees with you.
Starch is a complex carbohydrate. You may need to check your notes
for the kinds of foods which contain carbohydrates.
Sugar is a simple carbohydrate.
Mechanical Digestion
• Mechanical means moving parts – mechanical
pencil, mechanic, mechanical toys
• Food is broken into smaller pieces by moving
parts or muscles. For example, the chewing of
the teeth, churning of the stomach and
mashing of the tongue.
• Surface area: the area of all the surfaces of an
object
• Mechanical vs. chemical digestion animation
Chemical Digestion
• Chemicals break down food into smaller parts.
Examples, saliva, pancreatic juices, and
stomach juices(pepsin)
feed the system

Absorption
• absorption in the intestine

Bile Lab Questions
• What happened when you put the oil in the
water?
• What happened when you added the soap?
• Make a connection between this lab and how
bile works in the human body.
