Welcome to Biology Class
What is Biology Anyways?
Why do I need to know about Biology?
What is BIOLOGY?

OLOGY= Study
BIO = Life
 So Biology is the ………
“STUDY OF LIFE”
The science that employs the scientific method
to study living things.

How do organisms get arranged in life?

What would it take to be considered an
organism?




An orderly structure
Be able to produce offspring
Ability to grow and develop
Adjust to changes in environment.
Organisms interactions:

Organism rely on each other and the
environment for survival.

They form a web of life or food chain.

What is a web of life or food chain?
Web of life
Organisms in an ecosystem can be grouped
by the way they acquire & contribute food.
Characteristics of Living/Non Living
things.
What are some characteristics of living things?
Examples?
What are characteristics of non living
things?Examples?
Living = Organism

Must have an orderly structure

Must be able to produce offspring

Must be able to grow and develop

Must adjust to changes in environment
What are on non living things?

Some non living things may have some of the
criteria to be living BUT, they must show ALL
OF THE REQUIREMENTS.

Example: an iPod- it has an orderly structure but
non of the other criteria are met
= non living
Lets go outside and see what we can
find!!!!!




I will put you in groups of 2 .
You need to obtain a bag from the front table.
You will then, (in an orderly fashion) go
outside and collect 1 living and 1 non living
things.
When you have finished gather in a group
near the outside door.
Characteristics of living things: What are
they?








Made up of cells
Reproduce
Universal genetic code
Grow and develop
Obtain and use energy
Respond to their environment
Maintain and stabilize their internal
environment
As a group, living things change over time
Organization or Organisms

Organization = Structure

What gives something its structure?


One or more cells
Genetic make up =DNA
Organization continued….

If something is living it has a cellular
organization.

They all need to function (work) together in
an orderly, living system.
Levels of Organization
Molecules
 Cells
Groups of Cells
 Organism
 Population
 Community
 Ecosystem
 Biosphere


Reproduction:

The producing of offspring

Why do we need to reproduce?
What makes something a species?
Growth and Development

Organisms have to grow and develop

Start with a single cell===Multiply====
Characteristics start to form
Eventually, increase the amount of living
material=====formation of a new


structure
Growth can vary

Organisms and different species grow at
different rates.

Look around you some have grown a lot
some a little in a few years.
Throughout history

Organisms and the rate that they change has
been a gradual change but…..
It is still going on
Rule of thumb: more cells the more the change.
Adapt to the Environment

Air, water, temperature, weather, … etc..

Predators/prey… if a new organism comes in
to town what is going to happen?

Must have ability to respond to outside
stimulus.
The key to be adaptive and a living thing.

REQUIRES A STIMULUS.. SOMETHING
ACTING ON IT.

REQUIRES A REACTION OR RESPONSE.
Organisms reactions..
+ or – depends on Health

Most healthy environments run along a
HOMEOSTASIS.

Maintain internal conditions suitable for survival.


Correct amount of food, water, temperature…. Etc
All of the process in their lifetime depend on
ENERGY USE.
Adaptations: Evolution

The organisms must adapt

Biologist study the adaptations that cause a
permanent change or the arrival of a new
species
Known to be Evolution: the accumulation of
gradual change through time!!!
