SHE analysis contributed to the recognition of foraminiferal assemblages in a 8 m vibracore in southern Pamlico Sound, North Carolina. Two intervals (blue) during the history of this 7000 year-old estuary are characterized by neritic benthic species and planktonic foraminifera. At these times barrier islands must have been absent, possibly as the result of major hurricanes, allowing open shelf waters to extend into the southern part of the Sound.
