THE DESERT
DESCRIPTION:
A desert is the driest habitat of the entire world.
Life in this hot, dry environment is challenging,
requiring adaptations from both animals and plants.
Temperature in this place change drastically from
day to night… who could think about a desert like a
cold place ???
Well… It happens!!
At night the desert gets very cold.
There is too much to know about desert… this is a
very interesting place… when you think about it…
DESERT PLANTS
After a good shower of
rain, the desert becomes
green for a brief time and
pulsates with life.
Plants that live in the
desert have evolved
special adaptations for
capturing and storing
water.
SOME DESERT PLANTS:
Barrel cactus:
Its principal
characteristic is its form so unusual.
Organ pipe cactus: This a
very common plant, with a curious
form.
Welwitschia: This plant is
thought to be a relic from the
Jurassic period.
Crimson Hedgehog Cactus:
This plant do not have leaves. They stay
open at night, and bloom for about 3 to 5
days.
Fairy Duster: This plant
can bloom all year round but mostly
in February through May.
DESERT ANIMALS
Like the plants, animals
also have found several
ways to stay alive in this
conditions.
You can find many
species of insects,
reptiles, birds, and
mammals that have been
able to adapt to this
environment.
SOME DESERT ANIMALS:
Giant desert hairy scorpion: It’s
nocturnal. Its sting is painful but just has a
little effect on most humans.
Rattlesnake: Western diamondback:
It is the most famous of desert snakes for its
jointed rattles on the tail. It’s held in well-deserved
respect. It is true that is a venomous snake that can
give a deadly bite. It delivers enough venom in one
bite to kill six adult humans, but a snake will only
bite for 2 reasons: fear and food.
Coyote: It has a dog-like appearance. It
is not solitary and will form long-term pair
bonds. It can run up to 40 miles per hour.
Tarantula: This animal is a nocturnal
hunter. It does not spin a web to capture
its prey, but catches food by speed.
Camels: Its humps contain fat not water. It
can go without food and water for 3 to 4
days.
Lions: Lions in desert can go for weeks
without drinking water and survive on very few
preys. They must fight harder for its food than
in other regions, because stalking is made more
difficult by the open territory.
Ant: It’s cold blooded creature, emerging
when temperature go above 60 degrees and
move back underground when it top 111
degrees. Ants found considerable seeds from a
plant species that hadn’t produced seed in over
a year.
Roadrunner: It is capable of flight,
but it spends most of its time on the
ground. It is able to run up to 15 miles
per hour.
Gila Monster: This is one of only two
species of venomous lizards. While the bite
can overpower predators and prey, it is
rarely fatal to humans.
Kangaroo: It can move at speed up to
40 to 60 miles per hour. Most kangaroos
can only move both back legs together and
not one at a time.
As you can see each plant and animal must be
ready to play the game of survival…
They must adapt to their environment or die…
Two options… One solution!!
DESERT FOOD WEB
CYCLES: WATER CYCLE
Another name for the water cycle is the hydrologic cycle.
Sun, air, and the force of gravity keep the water cycle functioning
CARBON CYCLE
NITROGEN CYCLE
PHOSPHORUS CYCLE
Most of the hot and dry deserts don’t have many plants. The
animals that it has can survive with the ability under ground.
This is because they not be able to live in hot sun. They only
come out at night when it’s a little bit cooler.
All deserts every time are hot, but at night it’s fresher. That’s
why only a few animals and plants can lives there. If our
ecosystem will change in the deserts of heat to cold, may be it
can be better because it can has more species of plants and
animals. All animals and plants would change their adaptation
and habitat. If they would change in a fresh temperature as a
rain forest, probably they animals and plants will change their
color.
