SYMBIOSIS EXAMPLES
Mutualism
Mutualism – both
species in the
relationship benefit.
Ex) Bees pollinate
flowers, and get
nectar as a source of
food.
Parasitism
Parasitism – one
species benefits
(parasite); the other
is harmed (host)
Ex) mosquitoes get
nutrition from blood,
but also carry
diseases like malaria
& EEE that harm their
hosts
Commensalism
Commensalism – one
species benefits and
the other is
unaffected
Ex) clownfish live in sea
anemones, whose
stingers protect the
clownfish. However
the anemone is
unaffected.
The langur monkey & cattle
The wood tick
The oxpecker & the ox
The cattle egret and livestock
A cuckoo being raised by a warbler
The acacia ant
Spp. Daphnia – The Flea!
Another type of commensalism
Batesian mimicry –
one species evolves
to look like another
species, but the other
species is unaffected
Ex) the orchid mantis
The viceroy butterfly
The hoverfly
The planthopper
The owl moth
The hawkmoth caterpillar
