AquaMaps
Rainer Froese
GBIF-Copenhagen 30 January 2008
Three Tables Only
• HSPEN
– Species environmental tolerance envelopes
• HCAF
– Half-degree cell authority file
– Temp., PP, depth, salinity, … EEZ, LME, …
• HSPEC
– SpeciesCode, CellCode, Probability, Remark
Why Not GARP?
• Yes, AquaMaps are computer-generated,
but
• Points alone are insufficient:
– Known range, depth range, pelagic/benthic
• Transparency, reproducibility
• Editing by experts
• Formal comparison (submitted) shows
AquaMaps to be as good or better than
other algorithms in reproducing known
ranges
10,000 Species in 2008
•
•
•
•
Half of all marine fishes (7,000)
All marine mammals
All marine reptiles (turtles, snakes)
Many seabirds (those that are predicted by the properties
of the water)
• Several thousand invertebrates
• Important invasive species
Highlights 2008
• Points, suitable habitat and native range
on mouse-over
• Environmental envelopes for 10,000
species
• Biodiversity maps (species richness,
phylogeny, traits, importance, habitats, …)
• Prediction of invasive species
• MPA planning
• Transects
To Do
• Publish high impact paper on highlights
• Firmly integrate climate change (mouseover)
• Partner with biodiversity initiatives,
projects & proposals (‘Bio-mapping WP’)
• Map freshwater and terrestrial species
Usage by Others
• For selected species, code for thumbnails
and link to full maps can be included in
other web pages (download code from
AquaMaps page)
• For ‘heavy users’ lists of available maps
will be provided on request

• How to include AquaMaps in your own
web site
Scope for Partnership
• All AquaMaps are available to GBIF
• Homework:
– Have more good species with more than 10
good points
– Show depth ranges (adopt from OBIS
schema)
• Support mass-production of marine
AquaMaps
Scope for Partnership
• Assist GBIF Sweden to lead the effort for
mass-production of AquaMaps for
freshwater & terrestrial species
