Mouth- saliva begins the digestive process
Esophagus-the food tube-an involuntary muscle
Stomach-muscle, the esophagus empties here.
• It is 10 inches long & 5 inches wide.
• 2 openings guarded by a band of muscles called
the sphincter.
• After a meal is eaten the stomach contracts.
• Mixes the food, warms it to body temperature
• Juices flow in the stomach

Small intestine- About 22 ft long…unwound
• Most digestion takes place here
• All that remains is the water & waste
Large Intestine- propels water (H2O) &
wastes to the rectum
• Water is absorbed & wastes are stored
Digestive Process-continued
Kidneys- job is to eliminate waste or toxic materials from
the blood & maintain water balance in the body
Liver- produces bile (yellow) which helps break down food.
• Very large in size
Pancreas- produces pancreatic fluid which is vital in
digestion
• Also produces insulin which flows into the blood stream.
• Insulin- allows the body to use sugar & carbohydrates

Epiglottis- keeps food from getting into the
voice box (larynx) & trachea.
• Pushes food to the esophagus

Tongue- aids in chewing, swallowing, &
speaking
Taste Buds- sensory glands on the
tongue…like & dislike food
Salivary Glands & ducts- stores and lets
saliva get into the mouth
