CHANNEL WING REMOTELY
PILOTED VEHICLE (RPV)
“It doesn’t matter what the speed of the wing through the air is, only the speed of the air
over the wing” – Willard Custer
What is a Channel Wing?
- Channels create a soft ‘enclosure’ for
air
- Propellers to force air over top of wing
- Higher speed above wing decreases
pressure
- High pressure below wing results in lift
Straight Channel Wing
- Short take off distance (50-100 ft)
- Lower take off velocity
- Highest payload
- Medium Endurance
Why a Channel Wing Aircraft?
Conventional Planes/Helicopters
- Long take off distance/VTOL
- Small passenger
- Higher take off velocity (plane)
- Small to medium payload
- Maintenance Costs

VTOL Channel Wing
- Zero take off distance and velocity
- Lower Maintenance Cost vs. other VTOL
designs
- Medium Endurance
Applications
- Simple and reliable personal and business-sized
aircraft
- Ground vehicle safety detection
- Military missions
- Wildlife observation
