Mouth
The mouth is the
source of sound and
speech. It is a
mechanical type of
digestion. The mouth
is a digestive
secretion. It also
helps digest food by
breathing down the
material. The
function of the mouth
is chewing and saliva.
Salivary Gland
The salivary gland is
any of the three pairs
of glands inside the
mouth and digestive
system that conceal
the saliva for
digestion. The
function of the
salivary gland is
helping break down
the food that you eat.
Esophagus
The esophagus is a
mechanical type of
digestion. There are
no digestive secretion
and/or enzyme in the
esophagus. The
function of the
esophagus is moving
the food slowly down
to the stomach.
Stomach
The stomach is both a
mechanical and
chemical type of
digestion. The
digestive secretion
and/or enzyme of in
the stomach are:
pepsin, hydrochloric
acid, and mucus. The
function of the
stomach is digesting
the food.
Small Intestine
The small intestine is a
chemical type of
digestion. There are
no digestive secretion
and/or enzyme. The
function of the small
intestine is that it
receives partially
digested foods from the
stomach and absorbs
all the nutrients in the
bile from the stomach.
Large Intestine
The large intestine is
neither mechanical or
chemical, and also
has no digestive
secretion and/or
enzyme. The function
of the large intestine
is the large amounts
of water and salts are
reabsorbed back into
the blood.
Gall Bladder
The gall bladder is neither mechanical or
chemical, and also has no digestive and/or
enzyme. The function of the gall bladder
is that it aids in digestion of proteins and
carbohydrates.
Pancreas
The gall bladder is
neither mechanical or
chemical, and also
has no digestive
and/or enzyme. The
function of the gall
bladder is that it aids
in digestion of
proteins and
carbohydrates.
Liver
The liver is neither
mechanical or
chemical, and also
has a digestive
secretion. The
function of the liver is
processing nutrients
in food and
distributing it to other
organs so that they
can function.
Physical & Chemical Digestion
Physical– Chewing and churning
Chemical– Enzyme action
How are Nutrients Absorbed Into
the Blood?
Circulatory system
carries nutrients and
oxygen to all body
cells
Cell are then
nourished and
renewed, obtaining
the energy
Blood in arteries
carries oxygen and
nourishment to cells
Blood in veins is then
passing through heart
and into lungs, where
it exchanges carbon
dioxide for oxygen
Nutrients are now
absorbed into the
blood
Problems/Diseases of Digestive
System (Gastritis & Gastroenteritis)
A person that has ended up
with gastritis may experience
nausea, vomiting, abdominal
discomfort, loss of appetite,
bloating, and diarrhea.
Gastritis can also cause
bleeding (which may show up
in your vomit) or the passage
of black stools. You can
prevent yourself from getting
this disease by taking irritant
such as alcohol or medicine.
The treatment is to wait for the
irritating substances to leave
the stomach.
Gastroenteritis is an
inflammatory condition of the
stomach and the intestine
caused by infections or food
poisoning. The symptoms of
this disorder are: nausea,
vomiting, abdominal cramping
and tenderness, and diarrhea.
The appear suddenly and
without any warning. You can
prevent yourself from getting
this disease by getting any
infections or food poisoning in
your body. Doctors treat
gastroenteritis by
recommending that the patient
rest in bed and begin a
restricted diet.
