Changing the Speed of Motion – The Big Ideas

Motion is changed by a change in the force acting on
an object.
An object sitting still remains still until a force acts on it.
A moving object continues to move until a force stops it.
A force acting on a moving mass can change its speed
of motion.
A push in the same direction an object is moving
increases the object’s velocity (speed of motion).
A push from the opposite direction in which an object is
moving decreases its velocity (speed of motion).
Friction is a force that slows or stops the motion of a
rolling ball.
Changing the Speed of Motion – Prior Knowledge
Students are fascinated by objects in motion. It
will help for students to use the Fun-damental,
Making Things Move, to review forces and
motion. It will also be helpful if students have:
• observed or interacted with toys and other
objects that change speed while moving.
Changing the Speed of Motion –
Common Misconceptions
• Velocity is a force.
– Reality: Velocity is the rate and direction of the
change in the position of an object. It is not a force.
• If an object has a speed of zero, it has no
acceleration.
– Reality: An object with a zero net force on it is either
at rest or moving with constant speed. An object with
a non-zero net force will change its motion. This may
involve the object speeding up, slowing down and/or
changing direction.

Changing the Speed of Motion –
Instructional Ideas
• Students will work either alone or in pairs at a
computer to complete the virtual lab, Pulling
Your Weight.
– Have the students print out their results page and
hand it in for credit.
• Create a vocabulary scavenger hunt on
changing the speed of motion for your students
based on the glossary terms.
– Students can navigate through the interactive
glossary while answering your questions.
