Lesson Title: WHAT ARE ORGAN SYSTEMS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS?
B2.2 Animal Organs :Lesson 1
Learning Outcomes
(linking to Bloom’s Taxonomy)
Objective WALT:TO DESCRIBE THE ORGAN SYSTEMS OF
THE BODY AND THEIR SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
Outcome WILF:
1. ALL :Define the term ‘organ system’.
Name the main systems in the human body and state their functions.
Label a diagram of the digestive system. Describe the functions of the
digestive system to digest and absorb food molecules.
2. MOSTDescribe the functions of the organs in the system – salivary
glands, stomach, small intestine, Liver, pancreas and large intestine
3. SOME suggest health problems as a result of organs failing
ENGAGE
entry activity- on scrap
paper/white boards pupils
list as many organ systems
as they can. This could be
snow ball activity, eg
individually while register
done, then pairs , then
bench groups

Pupil activities
Evidencing progress
1. students sort organs into
students level work against
systems and match to function
success criteria.
2. Use torso- ask pupils to
come up and identify/explain
parts of digestive system,
Class to challenged to improve
explanation
And/or
Show video of digestive system.
Or use interactive organ builder

Rich Questions
How does the digestive
sysytem achieve efficient
diffusion?
Food in the gut is not in the
body- how could you argue
that this is true?
More Able/SEN
Students compare annotations to
answer sheet and grade/improve

WHAT ARE ORGAN SYSTEMS
AND THEIR FUNCTIONS?
WALT: TO DESCRIBE THE ORGAN SYSTEMS OF THE BODY AND
THEIR SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
WILF :
ALL/ GRADE C:Define the term ‘organ system’.
Name the main systems in the human body and state their functions.
Label a diagram of the digestive system.
Describe the functions of the digestive system to digest and absorb food molecules.
MOST/ GRADE B Describe the functions of the organs in the digestive system –
salivary glands, stomach, small intestine, Liver, pancreas and large intestine
SOME GRADE A suggest health problems as a result of organs failing
Organ systems- are groups of organs working
together to perform a particular function
SYSTEM
Circulatory
FUNCTION
The pumping ( heart) and channelling (blood vessels) of blood around the
body
Digestive
The breakdown and absorption of food
Endocrine
Communication within the body using hormones produced by endocrine
glands (eg pituitary gland, pancreas, adrenal glands)
Nervous
Collecting, transferring and processing information using the brain, spinal
cord and peripheral nerves
Urinary
kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra are involved in fluid balance,
electrolyte balance and excretion of urine.
Reproductive
Respiratory
Skeletal
Organs used to production of gametes and development of offspring
The organs used for breathing ( gas exchange) which include, lungs, trachea,
diaphragm and bronchi
Structural support
Homework
For next lesson find definitions of the following terms
•
•

•
Organ system
Organ
Tissue
Cell differentiation
• For each term provide an example from a plant and an animal.

Reflection on my learning
Today I was learning at grade…………………..
Barriers to achieving the highest grade
were……………………….
How challenging was the lesson? ……………………………….
Write down two questions you have about todays lesson.
What Do You Need To Do To
Improve Your learning?
HOW WELL DID YOU DO?
Grade C- the functions of
the organs in the digestive
system – salivary glands,
stomach, small intestine, Liver,
pancreas and large intestine
all stated
Grade B – details of the
importance is also included
Grade A- some health
problems are suggested
Grade A*- most aspects are
included for all organs
HOW COULD YOU
IMPROVE?
Organ
Function
Importance
Health problems
1.mouth
Mechanical/physical
digestion - food chewed to
break up into smaller
particles
Surface area of food
increased so enzyme
breakdown is quicker
Poorly chewed food is not
completely digested could
lead to malnourishment
2. Salivary
glands
Produce the enzyme
amylase in the saliva
Amylase breaks down
starch into maltose, salvia
makes food easier to
swallow
Saliva also reduces bacteria
in mouth so tooth decay can
be increase and without
lubrication damage to the
oesophagus may happen
3. stomach
Muscular sac, contractions
churn food and mix with
gastric juices which contain
protein digesting enzymes,
mucus and HCl
HCl provides optimum pH
for protein enzymes,&
destroys harmful bacteria,
breakdown of protein
starts here
Painful stomach ulcers can
form when acid burns tissues
lining the stomach
4. pancreas
To produce enzymes and
insulin
Required for final stages of
digestion of protein, fats &
carbohydrates
Type 1 Diabetes if insulin
production fails
5. Small
intestine
Final digestion of food and
site of absorption into the
blood
Highly adapted for efficient
diffusion of digested food
malnourishment
6. Rectum &
7 anus
To compact and store faeces
before egestion from anus
Removal of undigested
food from the body
Lack of fibre in diet can lead
to constipation
8 Appendix
NO FUNCTION
NON IN HUMANS-
Appendicitis and need to be
removed
9. Large
intestine
Site of water absorption and
some vitamins
Helps ensure water in body
is balanced
Excessive diarrhoea can lead
to dehydration
10.Liver
11.Gall
bladder
Liver produces bile which is
stored in the gall bladder
Bile is used to emulsify
fats, it increases the
surface area for efficient
enzyme action
Gall stones can form leading
to removal of gall bladder,
patient needs to eat a very
low fat diet
