Population Density
Day 12
Population Density: the number of
people living on a square mile of land.
A large area of land with few people is
said to be sparsely populated.
A small area of land with many people is
said to be densely populated.
Dense or Sparse?
Dense or Sparse?
Density (D) is determined by dividing the total
population (P) of a region by its total land area (A).
P÷A=D
Population density is measured by people per
square mile. For example, the population
density of Louisiana is 105 people per square
mile.
Another example is London, England whose
population density is 13,400 people per square
mile. Pretty crowded, isn’t it!!!!
Now, you try it!
P÷A=D
If the population of a city was 250,000, and the
size of the city was 200 square miles. What
would that city’s population density be. (You’ll
probably need your calculator for this.)
If you answered 1250 people
per square mile (ppm) then you
are correct!
World Population Density
What region of the world is the
most densely populated?
The darker the color, the denser the population is. What regions are
most densely populated?
What geographic reasons might explain the areas in white
where very few people live?
Population distribution is another term
for settlement pattern.
Larger settlements of people are found
where the soil is fertile, where water is
available, and where the climate is not
extreme or harsh.
Europe and Asia are the most densely
populated regions of the world. 60% of
the world’s population lives in Asia.
Populations are also dense around
urban areas (cities).
Reasons for this include:
• Employment
•Housing
•Access to services
(ex. hospitals,
schools,
entertainment)
Which statement best
describes a pattern of
population in
California?
A)All of California is densely populated.
B)California’s most densely populated area is in the
north.
C) All of California is sparsely populated.
D) California has densely populated areas near the coast.
What term is used to describe
a country’s population when
the country is large in area but
has a small population?
A) scant
B) slight
C) sparse
D) scarce
Population distribution has more to do
with where people settle than how many.
All of the following are reasons that
larger settlements occur, EXCEPT:
A) Fertile soil
B) Limited availability of water
C) Temperate climate
D) Availability of jobs
Which of the following regions of the
world is most densely population?
A) North America
B) Africa
C) South America
D) Europe
Six out of every ten people in the world
live in which of the following regions?
A) Africa
B) United States
C) Europe
D) Asia
Discussion
questions:
What problems might arise
in a densely populated
region?
What problems might arise
in a sparsely populated
region?
Discussion questions:
Pretend that you are a parish planner. It is up
to you to make sure that the parish serves its
population’s needs.
If you noticed a ten-year trend of population
increases for Bossier Parish, what kinds of
things would you do to keep up with that?
What would you include in your long term
plan?
