The Five Themes of
Geography
Theme #1: Place
• PLACE: The physical characteristics that describe an
area.
– Natural characteristics: Things like rivers, deserts
and mountains
– Human characteristics: Things like roads, buildings
and monuments
– What do you see? Hear? Smell? Feel?
– How do you know where you are?

Theme #2: Location
• Location: Where something can be found.
– There are 2 types of location.
• Relative Location
AND
• Absolute Location
Relative Location
• Describes the location of something when you
compare it to something else.
Wisconsin is north of Illinois
Ohio is east of Indiana
Lake Michigan is between Wisconsin and Michigan
Relative Location continued
The blue boy sits in front
of the purple girl.
The green house is next to
the yellow house
Relative Location can change.
How???
Absolute Location
• Gives the exact or absolute location of
something.
Usually given as a geographic coordinate or an
address.
Absolute Location continued
Menasha, WI is located at
44°N, 88°W
Absolute Location continued
Maplewood Middle School
1600 Midway Road
Menasha, WI 54952
Absolute Location does not change
Theme # 3 Movement
• Movement: The way people, goods, and
information get from one location to another.
– How did you get to school today?
– How did the bananas get from South American
plantations to your kitchen counter?
– How did you hear about what happened in the
news?
(A bus is not an example of movement.
RIDING on a bus is an example of movement.)
Movement of people
Movement of goods
Movement of information
Theme # 4: Regions
• Regions: Areas with common characteristics.
• What does this mean?
– They share the same examples of PLACE.
Regions can by geographic or they can be cultural.
(Or, they can be both.)
Now, what does that mean???
Geographic Regions
• These are regions that share some geographic
feature, climate or a common location.
The Mid-West is a geographic
region because the states are
located in the middle of the
western half of the U.S. and all
have a similar climate.
We might also call this
area the Great Lakes region.
Geographic Regions continued
• The Fox Valley is a geographic region.
• Why?
The Fox Valley
Located
along the
Fox River
Similar Location
Same Climate
Before we can learn about culture regions,
we need to figure out what “culture”
means.
Culture: The beliefs, customs, values,
laws, religion, language and ways of
living that a group of people share.
Culture Regions: Areas of the world
where many people in that area share
the same culture.
Culture Regions
Packer Country
The Dairy State
The Middle East
Geography:
•Climate
•Natural resources
•Landforms
Culture:
•Religion
•Language
The Middle East is both a
geographic region
AND
a culture region.
WHY?
Theme #5: Human and
Environmental Interaction (H.E.I.)
H.E.I: The way people interact
with their environment.
People will do this in
3 different ways:
•Adapt to their environment
•Modify their environment
•Depend on their environment
How do we adapt to our
environment?
How do we modify our
environment?
How do we depend on our
environment?
Thank you!
